The 2021 Syrah vintage was generally quite uniform in its high quality across the different clones, and the selection for this single vineyard bottling came down to finer details, namely textural subtleties and gentle nuances of flavour and aromas that give this wine a degree of completeness and understated elegance. As always, our Fromm Vineyard Syrah matures slowly and gracefully and will reward extended bottle aging.

You really sense the old vines here with the bark, mushroom, black-fruit and spice character. Medium-bodied. Lovely core of fruit and a flavorful finish. Open, light and chewy tannins. Fascinating. Old vines of syrah next to the winery. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.

FROMM Syrah Fromm Vineyard 2020
2020 was an excellent vintage for Syrah. We selected 4 barrels to make up our “Single Vineyard” wine, predominantly from our original 1992 plantings, which showed an extra level of finesse and slightly finer and more persistent tannin support. 

This understated, subtle and complex wine shows already excellent integration, combining dark berry fruit and spice aromas with lifted floral notes, typical for young cool-climate Syrah. Still somewhat shy in its youth, it has everything there to fully develop in the next few years into a graceful and expressive Syrah as we have seen from similar great vintage in the past.

It’s brooding and engaging on the nose showing dark fruit richness, violet, tar, game and warm spice aromas, followed by a concentrated palate that’s plump and flavoursome. Pure, ripe and varietal with distinctive floral and mineral scents, black cherry and dark raspberry. These ideas are mirrored on the palate with surrounded by a firm textue of fruit then some wood tannins, youthful acid topline and complexity from baking spices and lees and earthy mineral qualities. Delicious, fresh, very new still and will continue to age and develop if you can be patient. Lengthy complex finish with best drinking from late 2024 through 2030+.

This is a beautiful and charming Syrah, offering a gentle, spicy nose combined with some well-integrated, subtle oak. The palate is equally delicate and refined with lovely balance and texture.

 FROMM Syrah Fromm Vineyard 2016
Our Fromm Vineyard Syrah is grown solely at our ‘Home Vineyard’ in the Wairau Valley with a large proportion of the wine made up of fruit from our oldest (now 27-year-old) vines.  A great example of a well made cool climate Syrah that processes power without precluding finesse. Rosemary marinated lamb backstraps with a nice char from the BBQ have certainly met their match here.
